Living a Disability Adventure

We anticipated adventure when we moved to our acreage in 1995. We had visions of wildlife in the backyard, a horse or two in the pasture, and raising our daughters in the fresh air of the rural Midwest. Instead, we were faced with living a disability adventure. Acres of Ability is our way of sharing resources for anyone living a disability adventure.

Unexpected Adventure

Just three weeks after moving out of the city and onto the farm, our daughter, Kyra, was born. That’s when we began living our disability adventure. She missed milestone after developmental milestone, didn’t eat, cried all the time, and began having seizures and other neurological symptoms very early. As the extent of her disability became clear, our family experienced the heartache that comes with grieving a shattered dream.

Even living with her disability, Kyra is the bright spot in our lives. She shares her smile freely, brightening even the gloomiest day, and she’s always up for learning something new. Every day we are inspired by her unflagging joy. Still, that ache lingers like a stubborn bruise, just behind the heart.

Kyra shares her smile freely, brightening even the gloomiest day.

We would give almost anything for Kyra to be able to eat, and talk, and sit up, and walk, and enjoy just a bit of the independence we take for granted. She has tried so many different therapies that promise great results, but they always fall far short of our expectations. Maybe you understand what that feels like, too.

You’re Welcome Here

That’s why we want to share Acres of Ability with you. We want to tell you stories about Kyra’s successes and failures, and offer you resources for living a disability adventure. Whether your adventure includes wheelchairs, feeding tubes, alternative communication, therapies, surgeries, frequent medical appointments or something else, you’re welcome here.

Peace,

Sara & Kyra
